In the USA, CLP youth leaders are organizing some relief efforts to support the work of TYCL (CLP-India) leaders in India.
The "Stuff the Suitcase" initiative asks Norte Vista students to donate school supplies and letters/items of support to be taken back to India by TYCL Executive Learner, MDS Shiva. Shiva will return to India on January 20th. The final day to make donations of items or money is January 18th.
The following items are welcomed:
- Quality pens, pencils, markers
- Notebooks
- Letters of support (for children and youth) using pictures and items from home
- Items of support (very small bears, cards, etc.)
- Money (can be donated on MLK Day of Service at Arlanza Garden on the 16th or online)
Items can be dropped off in Mr. Mason's room, Room 206 or at the MLK Day of Service on January 16th at the Arlanza Community Garden.

Youth leaders have begun a "Stuff the Suitcase" campaign-- an effort to raise school supplies and materials for Shiva to take back and use immediately in CMC village. Youth are also motivating friends and family to donate online on or before January 16th's Martin Luther King Day of Service at the Arlanza Garden.

Village People are on the Road for Food and Shelter
CMC village people have given a written request to local government after receiving "NO RESPONSE" of assistance for three days (02/01/2012). The community blocked the road more than one and half hours in an effort to receive safe water, food and shelter. They blocked the road from CMC Village, Pondicerry to Chennai Highway (East Coast Road). After huge traffic at the highway, the Local Administration officer, Block Development office and Police came and said that they will try to assess the village and make decisions for relief and rehabilitation.
All the village women, men and children took part in this "ROAD BLOCK". TYCL and MUGHIL Social Welfare Organization young adults are trying to provide safe drinking water and food to needy people and children at the village.

Update from Pondicherry, India:
After the rains calmed, Trust for Youth and Child Leadership (TYCL/CLP-India) leaders began work with MUGHIL Social Welfare Organization leaders to organize hot meals and food packets for two villages involved in the CLP/TYCL leadership program who are impacted by the cyclone.
After mobilizing funds from the TYCL and MUGHIL and family members, the young adult leaders prepared food and food packets in the local Children's Activity Center. In the Chinna Mudliyar Chavady (CMC) village (community of the Child Collective) over 85% of the houses have been severely damaged. There is no running water-- the only tap water is currently running with red mud. There is no food. There is no electricity.
As a team, the TYCL/Mughil leaders prepared hot meals for over 110 families in CMC and food packets for 55 families in the Kottakuppam community. The total cost of preparing this meal for the two communities was Rs 26,000 (approximately $520).
As of this writing, no one from the government or other community organizations have approached the CMC village to assist. Your donation, however large or small, can make the difference between going with or without food for this community. Considering that this community was not recognized and assisted during the tsunami, it is a serious concern as to whether or not they will receive help in the immediate future or if they will have to wait much longer.

Cyclone Thane hits Puducherry, Tamil Nadu; 19 dead (Dec 31, 2011)
Puducherry: Cyclone Thane hit the coast of Tamil Nadu on Friday, making landfall between Puducherry and Cuddalore that has resulted in the death of 19 people so far. So far 12 people have been reported dead in Cuddalore and seven dead in Puducherry.
Five people died in Cuddalore in incidents of wall collapse and electrocution, officials said. A 45-year old man of Vanarampet village in Puducherry died in house collapse. (Watch: NDTV's Ground Zero report from Puducherry)
The landfall happened very close to Cuddalore, southeast of Puducherry. The system is likely to move westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast, close to south of Puducherry, within a few hours and weaken gradually. As a result very heavy rainfall will continue over Northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Rayalseema.
Puduchery District Collector S B Deepak Kumar said that rescue operations were in full swing in the union territory. Uprooted trees were being removed from the roads.
Train services from southern Tamil Nadu were hit as many of them ran late or were stopped in the nearby station while flights to international destinations by private carriers
including to Kuwait and Malaysia from Chennai were cancelled.
Cuddalore was the most affected, with damaged roads rendering it difficult for rescue teams including those from National Disaster Response Force and fire and rescue services to reach the cyclone hit fishing hamlets.
District Collector Amuthavalli said even as communication lines remained affected, over 5000 houses of fishermen had been damaged.
"We don't know what is happening in the outside world. All that we have been hearing since last night is the howling of the wind. Several trees have fallen down. Even mobile phone signals are not proper," S Ravikumar, a Puducherry resident, told IANS.
Storm surge of about 1.0 to 1.5 meter above the astronomical tide is likely to inundate the low lying areas of Puducherry, Chennai, Tiruvallu, Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts of north Tamil Nadu.
Even after the landfall, the system is likely to maintain its intensity for 12 hours even after landfall weakens gradually. Under its influence rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy fall is likely to continue over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in next 24 hours.
Eight teams of the National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) have been sent to the coastal areas. Two of these teams will be in Andhra Pradesh, rest six in Tamil Nadu in view of the cyclone warning.
Another 15,000 men of the NDRF are on alert.
Schools buildings in Chennai have been turned into shelter homes and the entire city is on high alert.
A weather scientist had earlier said that Cyclone Thane would probably be half in intensity than that of the super-cyclone that struck Orissa in 1999 which packed wind speed of more than 220 km per hour.
